Glass Work
I studied and experimented with glass on and off through the 80's - early 90's
and was lucky to find Andrighetti's studio to cast in over a period of ten
years. Joanne Andrighetti helped me sand cast many sculptures, a lot of them
took two days in the annealing oven, to come through without cracking!
Mostly I
experimented, but over the years I do have a series of 'Hand' pieces that
slowly emerged out of that time, of which two are shown here. I began using
mirror as a glass canvas in the late 80's and through the mid 1990's produced
some works in various environmental ways. The 'Jones Seagarden' is on two
opposing walls in their powder room in their house, it pulls the viewer into
an 'infinity effect', and is successfully installed, enclosing the viewer in
a complete seascape.
The light wall sconces are a collaboration with Nathan Rafla,
potter/sculptur.
We produced a series of these 'light altars' he did the pottery bases and I
sand-cast the
glass tops and carved mirror to create a "pool of light" people can come
home to, in their living spaces.
The last picture shows a large kinetic sculpture, where each piece
revolves, and the entire piece can move as well, I guess I had to push the
limits and see how much glass could be put into space on a flat plane and
move...as well.
Skins
These are acrylic transfer paintings. They are a way of layering form and color that peel off glass, creating a skin like textural canvas. They can be hung, with or without light behind them and they can also just be stretched on frames.
I find this process compelling because I work blindly and backwards before I see what emerges. I like being on that invisible threshold of where form just begins to take shape. For me there is a profound depth of life there that deepens my connection with physical existence.
I am interested in the interconnection between life forms which exist now and those that have long left us but whose shadows remain as fossils. Out of this impulse, I use materials that are layered and hold light.
It is in this vital raw alive place that I attempt to reveal beauty in form connecting to the mystery of life.
